Optimising space to meet the new needs of TNT Express

TNT (FedEx) is a global leader in delivery services. Active in more than 200 countries, the company, a subsidiary of FedEx headquartered in Hoofddorp (Netherlands), has 68,000 employees and runs air and ground carrier networks in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas.

In Spain, TNT (FedEx) has 34 operating centres across the peninsula, with a combined surface area of 180,000 sqm, and employs more than 1,500 people, who provide delivery and collection services in all Spanish provinces.

The company needed to combine its two buildings in Madrid (Getafe and Barajas) into a single facility built to suit the companies new needs, with the space to handle expanding demand as the business grew in Spain. They were looking for a reliable partner who could deliver a high-quality building in a single space, that could also act as a model for replication across all of TNT (FedEx)'s European distribution operations.

Prologis delivered a 13,311 sqm build-to-suit in Prologis Park Puerta de Madrid. The space includes a number of innovations that perfectly meet the company's needs to optimise space. One such is the 5 fingers system, to handle the high volume of vans used for TNT (FedEx)'s last-mile deliveries.

Prologis's contribution meant TNT (FedEx) could save space and work more efficiently thanks to the innovative processes implemented in the project. Prologis successfully cut the building's space consumption by 11%, a saving that was fundamental to accommodate the new services the company expects to come from future growth and which will allow a doubling of output.

The new distribution centre can host up to 160 delivery vehicles and handle more than 100 long-distance trucks. Also, the TNT (FedEx) space in Prologis Park Puerta de Madrid comes with modern monitored energy-saving systems to manage and streamline operating costs, high-security systems to safeguard goods, employees and vehicles, and the Prologis seal of quality for sustainable building design, certified by BREEAM, so the company can reassure its staff their well-being has been put first.

TNT (FedEx) has boosted productivity by up to 5,000 items an hour thanks to the automatic classification system of the logistics space and the best-in-market technology it uses.
